How to determine whether the cab shock absorber is functioning properly

2022-03-22

Cab shock absorber As for the role of shock absorbers in a car, I believe you’re already somewhat familiar with it. As the name suggests, cab shock absorbers are designed to dampen vibrations during driving; in technical terms, they reduce oscillations between the chassis and the vehicle body, enhancing ride smoothness and comfort. Vehicle suspension systems typically incorporate shock absorbers. Cab shock absorbers help mitigate road impacts, quickly absorbing the vibrations generated when the car encounters bumps, thereby restoring the vehicle to a stable, normal state of motion and significantly improving driving comfort. Now, let’s explore how to determine whether your cab shock absorber is functioning properly.

  1. Drive the vehicle onto a rough, adverse‑condition road and, after traveling 10 km, pull over and feel the shock absorber housing with your hand. If it does not become sufficiently warm, this indicates that there is no internal damping resistance, meaning the shock absorber is not functioning. In this case, add an appropriate amount of lubricant and retest; if the housing heats up, it suggests that the shock absorber contains insufficient oil—top up with enough oil. Otherwise, the shock absorber will fail to perform its intended function.

  2. Press down firmly on the bumper, then release it. If the vehicle bounces two to three times, the shock absorbers are functioning properly; otherwise, they are not operating correctly.

  3. When a vehicle is traveling slowly and applies emergency brakes, severe vibrations indicate that the shock absorbers are malfunctioning.

  4. Remove the hydraulic buffer and position it vertically, clamping its lower connecting ring in a vise. Then, pull the hydraulic buffer several times with force. At this point, you should feel consistent resistance; the upward‑pulling resistance must be greater than the downward‑pulling resistance. If the resistance is unstable or absent, it may indicate insufficient oil inside the hydraulic buffer or damage to the valve components, requiring repair or replacement of the affected parts.

In addition to the four methods mentioned above, you should also check. Cab shock absorber Check for oil leaks and unusual noises.

When an oil leak occurs, first check whether the oil seal and sealing gaskets are cracked or damaged, and whether the cylinder head nuts are loose. If the oil seal or gasket is damaged, replace it with a new one. If the leak persists, remove the hydraulic buffer; then, by feeling for any play, determine whether the clearance between the piston and cylinder bore is excessive, whether the piston rod of the hydraulic buffer is bent, and whether the surface of the piston rod or the cylinder bore is damaged.

When the hydraulic buffer is free of oil leakage, inspect its connecting pins, connecting rods, connection holes, rubber bushings, and other components for damage, weld failures, cracks, or detached parts. If these inspections reveal no abnormalities, proceed to disassemble the hydraulic buffer further, checking whether the clearance between the piston and cylinder bore is excessively large, whether the cylinder bore exhibits scratches, whether the valve seals are intact, whether the valve disc fits tightly against the valve seat, and the tension spring of the hydraulic buffer.

Hydraulic shock absorbers can develop noise-related malfunctions during operation. These issues typically arise from collisions between the shock absorber and the leaf springs, frame, or axle; damage or detachment of rubber mounts; deformation of the shock absorber’s dust boot; or insufficient oil levels. It is essential to identify the root cause and carry out appropriate repairs. Proper functioning of the shock absorbers ensures a smoother ride and contributes significantly to vehicle handling. They are also one of the key components that affect a car’s driving performance. Over time, prolonged use inevitably leads to wear and tear on the shock absorbers.
